South Africa for Adventure and Hiking Lovers: Free State & the Drakensberg

If your idea of a great holiday involves boots, a backpack, and a view earned by climbing rather than driving to it, South Africa has terrain that belongs on your list. The Free State and the Drakensberg mountain range, in particular, offer some of the country's most rewarding, least crowded hiking.

Mushroom Rock: One of South Africa's Strangest Landmarks

Near the village of Clarens in the Free State sits Mushroom Rock, a sandstone formation carved by centuries of wind and water erosion into an unmistakable mushroom shape. It's one of South Africa's many unusual natural wonders, tucked into a region most international visitors never think to explore, and it makes for a short, rewarding walk with a genuinely strange payoff at the end.

The wider Golden Gate Highlands National Park, home to Mushroom Rock, is riddled with similarly dramatic sandstone cliffs and formations, all glowing gold and orange in the low light of early morning and late afternoon. It's an easy add-on for hikers who want scenery that feels almost otherworldly, without the altitude or difficulty of a major mountain trek.

Clarens: The Base Camp

The village of Clarens itself has become a hub for hikers and outdoor lovers, small enough to feel like a genuine escape, with easy access to Golden Gate's trails and the wider Maluti Mountains along the Lesotho border. It's a good base for a few days of moderate hiking without committing to a full multi-day trek.

The Drakensberg: South Africa's Great Mountain Range

For hikers who want something more serious, the Drakensberg delivers. This UNESCO World Heritage mountain range runs along the KwaZulu-Natal and Free State border, with trails ranging from gentle half-day walks to demanding multi-day treks.

The Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls, reached via the Sentinel Peak hike, is one of the most iconic routes: a chain-ladder ascent leads to views over the world's second-highest waterfall and a sweeping basalt amphitheatre that stretches for kilometres.

Cathedral Peak offers a genuinely challenging full-day hike with a scramble near the summit, rewarding fit, well-prepared hikers with 360-degree views over the entire range.

Giant's Castle combines hiking with wildlife and heritage, home to some of the best-preserved San rock art in the country alongside its trail network, connecting adventure travel with a deeper cultural layer.

What Makes This Region Worth the Trip

Unlike more heavily marketed hiking destinations elsewhere in the world, the Drakensberg and Free State offer serious trails without serious crowds. You can stand at the top of a chain ladder overlooking Tugela Falls, or walk out to Mushroom Rock at sunset, and genuinely have the moment mostly to yourself.

Planning an Adventure Itinerary

  • Altitude and weather change fast in the Drakensberg, pack layers even in summer, and check conditions before committing to a demanding route.

  • Permits are required for certain Drakensberg trails, particularly overnight hikes, so this is a region worth planning with local guidance rather than winging it.

  • Combine regions for a full trip: a few days based in Clarens, followed by a Drakensberg push, makes for a well-paced week of South African hiking.
